For many Canadian citizens and permanent residents, having parents and grandparents close by is more than just a comfort—it’s a way to keep family bonds strong across generations. Unfortunately, the standard visitor visa only allows a six-month stay, which often falls short for families who want longer visits.
That’s where the Canada Super Visa comes in.
The Super Visa is a long-term, multiple-entry visa designed specifically for parents and grandparents of Canadian citizens and permanent residents. It allows eligible family members to stay in Canada for up to five years per visit, with the option to extend for two additional years. The visa remains valid for up to 10 years, offering the flexibility of multiple entries during that time.
Unlike the limited and competitive Parents and Grandparents Program (PGP) for permanent residency, the Super Visa provides a practical and flexible solution for extended family visits without long application waits.
Super Visa vs. Visitor Visa: Key Differences
While both visas fall under the category of Temporary Resident Visas (TRVs), they are very different in purpose and length of stay. Here’s why the Super Visa is the better option for long-term family visits:
Features | Super Visa | Standard Visitor Visa |
Length of Stay per Entry | Up to 5 years, with an option to extend for 2 more years | Up to 6 months per entry |
Visa Validity | Up to 10 years (multiple-entry) | At officer’s discretion; may be shorter than 10 years (single or multiple-entry) |
Financial Requirement | Host child/grandchild must meet minimum income (LICO) | No specific income requirement for host |
Medical Insurance | Mandatory: proof of paid Canadian or OSFI-approved insurance required | Not required |
Purpose | Long-term family reunification | Short-term visits (tourism, business, short family visits) |
Key Eligibility Requirements for the Super Visa
To qualify for a Canada Super Visa, both the applicant (parent or grandparent) and the host (child or grandchild in Canada) must meet specific requirements.
Requirements for the Applicant
- Must be the parent or grandparent of a Canadian citizen or permanent resident.
- Must apply from outside Canada and be admissible (no medical or criminal concerns).
- Must complete an immigration medical exam.
- Must provide proof of medical insurance that:
- Is valid for at least one year from the date of entry.
- Provides a minimum coverage of $100,000 for health care, hospitalization, and repatriation.
- Has been paid in full (quotes are not accepted).
Requirements for the Host (Child or Grandchild in Canada)
- Must be a Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or registered Indian.
- Must be at least 18 years old and living in Canada.
- Must meet or exceed the Low-Income Cut-Off (LICO) for household size (spouses or partners may co-sign).
- Must provide a letter of invitation that includes:
- A written promise of financial support.
- Details of household members to prove that income requirements are met.
Documents Required for a Strong Super Visa Application
Applicants should prepare the following documents to maximize approval chances:
- Letter of Invitation from the host child or grandchild.
- Proof of the host’s income (Notice of Assessment, T4 slips, pay stubs, or employment letters).
- Proof of host’s Canadian status (citizenship certificate, PR card, or Secure Certificate of Indian Status).
- Proof of medical insurance meeting Super Visa requirements.
- Proof of relationship to the host (e.g., birth certificate).
- Confirmation of completed immigration medical exam.
- A valid passport.
- Evidence that the applicant will leave Canada when required (ties to home country).
Canada Super Visa Insurance
Medical insurance is a mandatory requirement and often the most challenging part of the Super Visa application. To qualify:
- Coverage must be at least $100,000.
- The policy must be valid for at least one year from the entry date.
- Payment must be made in full or partially before applying (quotes are not accepted).
This ensures that parents and grandparents are protected in the event of a medical emergency and that they do not place a financial burden on Canada’s public healthcare system.
